How to use gematria: a practical guide to the calculator

1. The letter values
A gematria cipher is just a table saying what each letter is worth. This site uses English Gematria, also called Sumerian: take the letter’s position in the alphabet and multiply by six. A is 1st, so A = 6. Z is 26th, so Z = 156.

Every value is a multiple of six. That single fact does more work than anything else on this page — come back to it in step 4. Other ciphers use other tables; the multi-cipher calculator runs the same word through seven of them at once, and the glossary defines each one.
2. Your first calculation
Take the word LIGHT. Look each letter up in the table above and add:

L 72 + I 54 + G 42 + H 48 + T 120 = 336. That is the whole method. The calculator does the addition and then does the part you cannot do by hand: it searches the database for every other word that also comes to 336.
What the calculator ignores
Only the letters A–Z are counted. Everything else is skipped, which has consequences worth knowing before you start comparing things:
- Spaces are ignored, so a phrase and the same phrase run together always match. That is not a discovery.
- Punctuation is ignored, so
St. John,St Johnandstjohnare one input as far as the arithmetic is concerned. - Digits are ignored. Typing
2026contributes nothing. If you want the number itself, search for the value instead of the text. - Case is ignored.

The one rule you have to impose yourself is spelling. Pick a form of a name — with or without a middle initial, English or transliterated — and keep it for the whole session. Changing spelling halfway through is the fastest way to produce a match you cannot reproduce tomorrow.
3. Reading the four numbers
A result gives you four things. Only the first is a fact about your word; the rest are ways of grouping it with others.
Total — 336
The sum of the letters. Reproducible, and the only number here that is purely a property of the text you typed.
Digital root — 3
Add the digits until one is left: 336 → 3+3+6 = 12 → 1+2 = 3. It sorts every word in existence into nine buckets, so use it to group, never as evidence.
Base root — yes or no
A total sitting on this cipher’s 54-step ladder: 6, 60, 114, 168, 222 and so on. AIR = 168 is one. LIGHT is not. It is a structural label, not a verdict.
Words sharing the value
Everything else in the database totalling 336 — alter, later and the rest. This is the list you actually came for, and step 4 is about reading it honestly.
Every value has its own page listing all of its words, so /v/336 is the permanent address for that list. Bookmark or share it rather than re-running the search.
4. Does the match mean anything?
This is the step most gematria guides skip, and it is the only one that separates research from pattern-matching. Before reading anything into two words sharing a value, rule out the three ways that match was going to happen regardless.
a. The value space is smaller than it looks
Every letter in this cipher is a multiple of six, so every total is too. 337 is not a gematria value and never will be. That immediately removes five out of every six numbers from play.
Narrow it further to one word length and the space collapses. A five-letter word must land between 30 (AAAAA) and 780 (ZZZZZ), in steps of six — 126 possible totals, and no others. English has far more than 126 five-letter words, so some of them must collide. Shared values are not rare events; they are the normal state of affairs.
b. Anagrams always match
Addition ignores order. EARTH and HEART both total 312 because they are the same five letters in a different arrangement. So do ALTER and LATER, at 336. Every anagram pair in every additive cipher matches, every time. If your two words are anagrams, you have found a property of the alphabet, not a correspondence.
c. Digital roots are nine buckets
There are nine possible digital roots, so two unrelated words share one about one time in nine. A shared digital root, on its own, is close to no evidence at all. It is a useful way to sort a long list; it is not a finding.
The test that actually works: run controls
A match only carries information if it happens more often among related words than among unrelated ones. So check both.
- Write down the claim before you test it. “Words about light cluster at 336” is testable. “Something interesting is going on with 336” is not.
- Build the related set. Five to ten words you would have chosen before you saw any totals. Choosing them afterwards is cherry-picking, and it will always succeed.
- Build a control set of the same size. Words with nothing to do with your theme — open a book and take the first ten nouns. Run them the same way.
- Compare the hit rates. If three of ten themed words match and three of ten random words match, you have measured the coincidence floor, not a pattern.
- Keep the misses. Words you expected to match and that didn’t are evidence. A note that records only the hits is a note that cannot be wrong, which makes it worthless.
FAITH and HOPE both come to 264. Two thematically linked words, different lengths, exact same total — it looks like a find. Then run the controls: 264 is one of a few hundred reachable values, both words are short, and the database holds plenty of unrelated words at 264 too. The honest write-up is “faith and hope share 264, at a rate consistent with chance” — which is still worth recording, just not worth building on.
5. Writing down what you found
A gematria note that someone else can check is worth more than a longer one they cannot. Record five things:
- The cipher. A bare number means nothing without it —
lightis 336 here and 56 in English Ordinal. - The exact input. Spelling, spacing and any title you included or dropped.
- The full set you tested, related and control, as chosen up front.
- The misses, by name.
- Your confidence, in a word: coincidence, worth another look, or reproducible.
Two people following that format on the same phrase should get the same numbers. That is the whole bar, and most published gematria does not clear it.
Five common mistakes
- Changing spelling until something matches. Adding a middle name, dropping a title, switching transliterations — try enough spellings and any target value becomes reachable. Fix the spelling first.
- Switching ciphers until something matches. Same problem, seven times over. Pick the cipher before the word.
- Reading a shared digital root as a match. One in nine. See step 4c.
- Comparing a phrase to a single word. Longer inputs reach higher totals, so a long phrase and a short word matching is a different kind of event from two words of the same length matching. Compare like with like.
- Testing one pair. A single coincidence has no denominator. The question is never “do these two match” but “how often do things like these match”.
Quick answers
- What letter values does this site use?
- A=6, B=12, C=18 … Z=156 — alphabet position times six, usually called English Gematria or Sumerian. A value only means something alongside the name of the cipher that produced it.
- Do numbers, spaces and punctuation count?
- No. Only A–Z. Because spacing is ignored, a phrase and the same phrase written as one word always match.
- What is a digital root?
- The digits of the total added until one remains: 336 → 12 → 3. Nine possible values, so roughly one unrelated pair in nine shares one. Full definition.
- Two words I care about share a value. Does that mean something?
- Usually not on its own. Every total is a multiple of six, and a five-letter word has only 126 totals available to it. Matches are the norm. What carries information is whether related words match more often than unrelated ones — which is what step 4 measures.
- Why do anagrams always match?
- Addition ignores order, so EARTH and HEART both total 312. An anagram match is arithmetic, not a finding.
- Is gematria a way to predict things?
- No, and this site does not present it as one. Gematria is a centuries-old interpretive and literary practice. The calculators here are for exploring correspondences in text. Nothing on this site is a prediction or advice — see the disclaimer.
